Penang Food Paradise #20 : Hutton Lane Koay Teow Th'ng

One of those ho liao Koay Teow Th'ng in town located in Jalan Hutton (also known as Hutton Lane) of Georgetown where the road is connected to Jalan Transfer. This Koay Teow Th'ng Stall situated in Fook Cheow Cafe unlike the others, is well known for its fish balls that make bowls and bowls of their Koay Teow Th'ng special. The fish balls are homemade which they would taste better than those were produced in the factories.

The other reason that make these bowls of Jalan Hutton Koay Teow Th'ng special to me is the vegetables that are being cooked together in the soup itself which make that soup taste sweet in its way if you are comparing to other Koay Teow Th'ng Stalls'. Besides, you may also ask for extra ingredients such as intestines with extra charges.

The MeeGo Handset : Nokia N9 and Sample Shots

Before we start : Video of a story about the making of the most beautifully simple smartphone.

A friend of mine has gotten himself a Nokia N9 recently. Nokia N9 is another new handset launched by Nokia running on MeeGo v1.2. MeeGo, a project that provides a Linux-based, open source software platform for the next generation of computing devices and it is visioned to offer innovative application experiences that users can take from device to device managed by the Linux Foundation. This handset feels a little bit heavier than Samsung Galaxy S2 in comparing just the appearance and in-palm-feeling. This Nokia N9 features 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 single core, 1GB of memory, internal memories of either 16GB or 64GB non-expendable, display of 3.9" AMOLED 854x480 resolution of screen, 8 megapixel camera with 720HD recordings, and of course a 14.4Mbps HSDPA.

photo 4.JPG The upper apperance of the device that comes with 3.5mm head jack.

photo 3.JPG The bottom look of the device where the speaker is located.

photo 2.JPG The volume buttons and sleep/wake button on the side of the device.

photo 1.JPG The 8 megapixel back camera with Carl Zeiss Tessar lens.

The operating system running on this device is called MeeGo. As mentioned earlier in this post, it is an Linux-based open source software managed by Linus Foundation, a conclusion of a sleek yet neat user interface can be concluded right away when you are interacting with this Nokia N9. The interface is lovely as I simply went across the applications. It is sort of the two dominant multitouch operating systems available in the market today, in between. The only thing the owner, a friend of mine, commented on this os itself is that unlike other operating systems there are just too few applications available in its application store. Technically, he is referring to the most popular app called Whatsapp which is unavailable in this MeeGo-powered Nokia N9.

photo 4.JPGThe messaging application is very well organized. Messages are categorized in days and dates.

Photos taken with this Nokia N9 has a good quality but there is a disappointment in the photo of a Sony camera when I was trying to focus on that Sony camera with this device. The photo of a cat taken with the dual LED flash seems to be satisfying, not too bright or not too dark - well balanced. Nevertheless, the quality of the photos taken with this Nokia N9 are pretty satisfying.

Tom Yam Noodle, everybody's favorite regardless of how old you are! Tom Yam Noodle is also called as Tom Yam Maggie which the Tom Yam served with the maggie noodles that is most welcomed by everyone including me. Well, in hunting for Tom Yam Noodle in Penang Island itself, a stall selling not only koay teow th'ng has been spotted unexpectedly selling this awesome bowl of Tom Yam Noodle as well in the morning! This stall is being operated by two brothers where their stall is temporary situated opposite of the Pulau Tikus Market, it will be moving back to its permanent location once the Pulau Tikus Market Food Court is finished in its renovation.

I assume most of the stalls selling Tom Yam Noodles serves their Tom Yam Noodles with the pastes they bought. Predictable, what makes this bowl of Tom Yam Noodle special to me rather than others? The paste they used. Rather than focusing on what brand is the paste is, this bowl of Pulau Tikus Tom Yam Noodle is served with the same ingredients as in the koay teow th'ng's they are selling. Well, is there anywhere else you think it is worth of giving it a hit? You may comment on the post below.

Thinking of having supper in Penang? What about a bowl or two Chulia Street Wan Tan Mee that the stall is situated on the roadside? Yep, this Wan Tan Mee Stall starts its business in the nighttime beside the street of Lebuh Chulia to where it is on the same street as Penang Beef Wan Tan Mee & Beef Soup Mee is in Penang's Georgetown. This Wan Tan Mee Stall is usually crowded with people who either visit the stall for their late dinner or supper where you may choose to have it there as there are tables and chairs arranged around the stall.

The ingredients in this bowl of Lebuh Chulia Wan Tan Mee are the broth consists of char siew, leafy vegetables, dumplings, and the noodles. What makes this bowl of Wan Tan Mee special is the broth and the dumplings served without the slices of mushrooms like Solok Slim Wan Tan Mee Stall do. Well, of course different stalls of Wan Tan Mee would have different kind of tastes in their broths, dumplings or any other ingredients in addition but the significant difference is how soft the noodles can be in the bowls of Wan Tan Mee you ordered among the stalls.

Penang Food Paradise #17 : Penang Famous Char Koay Kak

In relation to the previous Penang Food Paradise blog post on the Penang Famous Chee Cheong Fun, there is another famous stall that sells Char Koay Kak nearby which is in a few walking distance from the Chee Cheong Fun. The stall owner started her business for about 41 years selling the Famous Char Koay Kak in Penang's Mecalister Lane. The plates of Char Koay Kak is served together with a banana leaf beneath the Char Koay Kak which in other sense the banana leaf does a little favor in boosting the taste of the delicious Char Koay Kak. The ingredients consists of pieces carrot cakes, salted turnips, and bean sprouts which they will be fried together with the dark soy sauce with chilies and eggs as an optional.

Slices of carrot cakes and other ingredients were fried and being served on the table, Char Koay Kak.

This Char Koay Kak Stall and the Chee Cheong Fun's were the dishes I have since I were just a little kid. It has been more than 10 years having both of these awesome dishes. The Char Koay Kak we ordered are usually in 2 plates in which 1 plate with chilies and the other without chilies, both without eggs. What are you waiting for?

2012 New Year Countdown In Straits Quay

After 6 days over the Christmas in 2011, was the New 2012 Year Eve when my friends and I went for our countdown in Straits Quay where everyone will be able to enjoy the fireworks upon the countdown towards 2012 from the last day of 2011. The marina mall that night was crowded with people who were excited in welcoming 2012 and also awaited for the release of the beautiful fireworks by the sea too!

photo 4.JPG

The huge Christmas tree were still being displayed in Straits Quay lighted up with beautiful tiny little LED bulbs. Spaces of every corner in the mall were filled with people as there were various activities being held. People were smiling, laughing, chatting, loitering, gathering, taking photos, and so on as we were walking through.

photo 5.JPG

Walked through the main lobby of Straits Quay, there was a gigantic crowd gathered around the promenade where there was a live band performing at that moment. Squeezing through the crowds while we made our way towards the other end, we met our high school friend. We walked out of the crowd for football while waiting for the countdown which was a few minutes to come.

The "local football team" of the night celebrated their New Year Eve in Straits Quay. Simon, Raykee, Chien Chern, Arron, and I were so excited when the fireworks has started. We rushed towards the right spot for the fireworks as soon as we realized that we were waiting in the wrong spot. But nevermind, I got a few perfect shots below. Enjoy!

Last but not least, my new year resolution is get smarter and get healthier! What is yours?
